Effective Pedagogy for Every Learning Style

Today's students are more diverse than ever before, and as a result, one size rarely fits all. The Learn Series includes effective pedagogical features for multiple learning styles designed to engage learners with the concepts in the textbook as they read. The book's highly visual design and layout includes an abundance of large graphics and a visual presentation of topics to support analysis and synthesis of critical concepts.

Learn Psychology, the flagship title of the Learn Series, is a new paradigm in course curriculum aimed at preparing today's "digitally native" students for success in today's knowledge-based economy. The Learn Series is grounded in helping students "learn by doing" through immersive and interactive content and assessments—all carefully aligned to course objectives and program assessment goals.

The Learn Series book features below provide a preview of the material, check points to ensure key concepts are well understood, visual schematics and summaries to review information at the end of each chapter, and chapter tests to help learners assess their progress.

Chapter Outline
(show graphic form Preface, page xv)

Content-specific chapter outlines serve as the master plan for each chapter and include specific learning objectives for each major section that detail the scope and sequence of content included. This organization maps out the material to help instructors and learners see how the content and assessments are keyed to the learning objectives. Digital extension: Use Chapter Outlines to create custom study guides.

Chapter Opener
Each chapter begins with an overview of the key topics and presents a brief, true narrative that illustrates a central chapter concept.

Chapter Sections
Numbered sections, largely self-contained units of content instruction, address a major topic or concept. Any element or feature attached to, or labeled with, a section number reflects and is relevant to that section.

Section Preview Statement
A preview statement summarizes the content of the section that follows to prepare learners for the content ahead, providing advance organization during reading.

Figures and Tables
(show figures from page xvi of the preface)
Figures and tables underscore key points or present complex information, providing an effective alternative mode of instruction, presented schematically to aid the reader visually and reinforce the text. References to figures are in color to make it easier to locate the figure and pop right back into the reading
Concept Learning Check
(show Concept Learning Check 14.1 from page xvi of the preface)
Section-ending Concept Learning Checks give students an opportunity to test their mastery of the material in that section. These checks focus on “pain points” for students and provide extra coaching on key concepts, giving learners a chance to apply what they have studied in fresh examples or to see the material applied in a different context. Digital extension: Use Chapter Learning Checks to create custom study guides.

Critical Thinking Application
Critical Thinking Applications within each chapter highlight a challenging or topical concept that engages learners and asks them to participate and demonstrate their understanding of the concepts. Promotes 21st Century Workforce Skills

Summary of Multiple Influences in the Chapter
The final section of each chapter ties together the discussion of biological and environmental factors affecting our psychology and highlights the multiple influences on the topic presented.

Chapter Key Terms
Key Terms appear in blue in the text at point of use and are defined in a way that doesn't interrupt the main idea of the sentence. Key terms are also provided in the margin with sharp definitions that can be used as flashcards. Key terms are also found as an alphabetical list at the very end of the chapter and in the final glossary. Digital extension: Use Chapter Key Terms to create custom study guides.

Visual Overview
The Visual Overview provides a dynamic visual diagram of one or more key concepts and helps to tie chapter themes and segments into a cohesive whole.

Visual Summary
(show Visual Summary from page xvii of Preface)
Located at the end of the chapter, the Visual Summary recaps the main ideas in each section using brief, bulleted sentences and highlights them with an image that refers back to the section content.

Chapter Review Test
Chapter Review Tests are multiple choice self-quizzes that cover the entire chapter. Headings correlate to chapter sections as well as objective statements. Answers that provide complete rationales are also included. Digital Learning Objects: Chapter Review Tests can be activated in the eBook to give students maximum immersion in the material.

Chapter Discussion Questions
Open-ended questions are designed to provoke a thoughtful discussion in the classroom or in an online discussion board. These questions are carefully chosen to illuminate the key concepts of the chapter and to create a constructive experience of discussing, evaluating, and comparing, thereby solidifying and demonstrating understanding of the chapter content. Promotes 21st Century Workforce Skills

Chapter Projects
Potential projects for individuals, pairs, or small groups are suggested. These can be done in class or outside of class. They focus on an issue related to students' lives and experience, real-world applications, media depictions of textbook concepts, or learner experiences. Promotes 21st Century Workforce Skills

A Note on Writing Tone
One of the hallmarks of good writing is to know your audience. For Learn Psychology, our audience is the modern student, and our writing tone is directed toward them. Consequently, we chose to adopt a more informal writing style with a friendly, conversational tone.
